It is with great sadness that I inform members of the Association of the death of Michael Longley CBE.

Michael attended RBAI between 1951-58 and returned to teach at “Inst” from 1964-69 and became one of the greatest poets that Ireland has ever produced. Along with fellow Instonian Derek Mahon, who was year below him, and Seamus Heaney, they brought poetry to a new generation of readers – particularly throughout “The Troubles”.

“I’ve no doubt that I’m an Irish poet, or I’m nothing” he said only last year. “I’ve been cheering Irish rugby teams since I was teenager, 60 or 70 years; especially when they were playing England!”

Michael returned to Inst regularly; most recently in April 2023, when he was interviewed by Stephen Nolan. You can see that interview on: https//rbaifoundation.wistia.com/medias/auchz984q9

On behalf of Belfast Old Instonians’ Association, I extend our sincere condolences to Edna and their children and grandchildren.
